Weekend Recap

On Friday our street was finally paved and the years of construction officially came to an end.  Doesn't it look nice!?

At the end of the day we watched the F1 Sprint Quali and the kids took some downtime on the couch.

We had picked a couple of fancy pizzas for our supper.

After supper we walked up the street to try and find a geocache.  E was learning about this from a friend at school and apparently there was one near our house, but with the condo construction going on, it has been displaced.

After we got home we watched Part 1 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I'm sure I've seen it before I could not remember any of it! So now I wonder if I have seen it or if I fell asleep in the theatre!

We were all out of the house bright and early on Saturday.  It had been calling for rain, but it turned out to be a beautiful day.  E and I went to his baseball double header.

Coach Mom!

We had a great morning - 1 win and 1 loss.

Meanwhile Q and Dave were at the Opening Day for Q's t-ball league. And then he had ball hockey.

In the afternoon we had a drink with some neighbours to toast the end of the construction!

And then we settled in to watch the Maple Leafs in Game 7.  Q was tired and we sent him to bed at the first intermission.  The rest of us stayed up to witness the sad end to the Leafs' brief playoff run.

Another early morning on Saturday. It was Q's first t-ball game of the season.

Coach Dad sorting out the line up with the team.

I didn't stay for the game, instead going to church.  On my way home I found this robin's eggshell so I brought it home to show the boys.

When the boys were riding home from t-ball, they looked for more geocaches.

Q had a birthday party that afternoon so while he was there I did a few errands, including picking up this Smile cookie for him at Tim Hortons.

It was Junior Opening Day at the golf club so E was there golfing, and Dave managed to get out ahead of the juniors for 18 holes of his own.  Then Q and I met them for dinner at the club.
E (in the red hat) finishing up on 18.

Setting up for a group photo of the juniors.

And we managed to fit in an episode of The Amazing Race before bed.

Friday Favourites

On Monday I was craving a nice cookie so I set out after I ate my lunch to see what I could find.  This one from Maman in First Canadian Place hit the spot. It had chocolate, pretzels, and caramel.

We are enjoying the evening sunlight and have gotten out to play after supper.  The boys played hockey with some neighbours and Q and I threw the ball around on Wednesday.

Q was very successful with his reading this month and filled in his reading journal on both sides of this paper.  He kept up with it all month and then got a certificate from his teacher saying he is doing a good job!

Speaking of good work, E finished reading the Harry Potter series this week! Now we get to watch the final two movies.  It's been awhile for me so I can barely remember what happens.

And to celebrate my own success, I worked out everyday in April, and am continuing into May so far.  A little breakdown of what I did:
Bikes - 13
Bike Bootcamps - 3
Weights - 16
Pilates/Barre - 8
Stretching - 4
(I really need to incorporate more stretching!)

It's new glove time which means a variety of ways to break it in.  This is a vise clamp on top of the glove.

A favourite after dinner treat is cinnamon toast.  Both boys wanted some this week.

E went with crazy eyes...

...and then blue steel.

I love the Handful snacks.  They are a bit pricey but fortunately my office provides a few different versions. These are my two favourites.

Our weekend has a lot on the docket but there is also rain in the forecast so we will see what we actually end up doing.

Have a great weekend.

Linking up with Andrea and Erika.

Cell Phones in Schools

Cell phones in schools has been a big topic here for the past few days.  The Province of Ontario recently introduced its plan to restrict cell phone use (and vaping) in schools.  I have a few opinions about this so I thought I would write about it here.

My oldest son, E, is in Grade 7 (12 years old) and he does have a cell phone.  He was one of the last kids in his class to get one and if it was solely up to me he still wouldn't have one.  My position was that he just didn't need it.  However since he got it in the fall he has been quite responsible with it and does use it to stay in touch with his friends by texting.  He does not have any social media accounts, he doesn't watch much (if any) YouTube, and by checking in on his group chats I can see that mostly he is discussing video games and school work.

Our school (part of the English public school system in Toronto and has kids from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8) has rules for cell phone use, and they actually seem to align with what the Province has proposed.  Kids up to grade 6 have to power down their phones and are not permitted to use them at all during the school day.  Kids in grades 7 and 8 cannot have their phones in class and need to keep them in their locker.  If they want to have them at lunch, they can use them off of school property (since they are allowed to leave for lunch). However I am told, and have seen for myself when I'm there to volunteer on pizza day, that the rules are not being enforced.  Kids have them all the time and especially have them at lunch on school property.  The grade 7s and 8s all sit in the lunch room looking at and playing with their phones.  I'm also told that social media, particularly Snapchat, is a big problem and causes a lot of distractions for the kids.  Now E tells me that he does leave his phone in his locker, as he is told to do, and I have no reason not to believe him.

Apparently the reason why the school is having trouble enforcing the rules is that parents are pushing back saying they must be able to get in touch with their kids at any time throughout the day.  First of all, I can't believe that is actually true, and second, there is no reason why the parent cannot call the school office to get a message to their child.  I did that a number of times before E got his phone when I needed to tell him piano lessons were cancelled or whatever.  He always got the message.  I think if the school actually surveyed parents I think they would find the majority of them do not need to be in constant contact with their kids, and if that is the case, then we don't need to bend to the small majority.

With all of the media coverage of this matter, people have of course noted that phones can have great educational value, one example for students who speak English as a second language like the convenience of being able to look something up easily.  Students can also use them to records videos, take photos, and other things for science experiments, collect other data, and just do research. All valid points and if there is certain classwork where kids could use their phones, then maybe there could be an exception to the rule for that time.

However I think that sets up a dangerous precedent that everyone has to have a phone, and a phone with certain capabilities, just to complete classwork and that doesn't seem fair.  It's also difficult for a teacher to monitor exactly how the phones are being used in class, even if the initial reason is a valid one. But kids are quick with their phones and you know that in between the data collection, or whatever, they will be distracted by everything else on their phone.

I'm not naive enough to think that it's just the phones that are distractions in school.  How many notes did I write to my friends during class, and then covertly pass them along without the teacher seeing?  Sneaking in ways to speak to your friends when you're in class is part of the experience of being in school.  But the cell phones have just exponentially increased that distraction.  I also get that this is way people talk to each other now, but are we giving up on all of the other social skills people need to develop?

Online bullying is also a factor.  It used to be that if you were being bullied at school, at least when you got home you didn't have to worry about it.  And then the internet came around and nowhere was safe, the bullies followed you home through your computer.  Wouldn't it be interesting if we could flip this again, and make school the safe place? A place where everyone had a break from their phones, where people don't feel left out because they don't have a phone, or don't have the latest version, or don't have the AirPods and Apple Watch to go with it. Where kids can just talk to each other and gain other life skills besides how to post TikTok videos (a skill that I admittedly do not possess).

I'm glad that the province is trying to address this issue, but I am not pleased that I immediately got an email from the Toronto District School Board acknowledging the plan and saying they are considering how it could be implemented in this school (i.e. "we cannot say we will ban cell phones").  And I'm not pleased that our school had a good plan already but fails to enforce, allegedly because of a few loud parents.

If you are a parent, particularly of a child who has a phone, what are your thoughts on letting the kids have them all day long, without restrictions?

Weekend Recap

On Friday we welcomed Dave back home after his week golfing in Scotland.  He brought home a few goodies for us, including a new golf towel from St. Andrews for me.  Not only did I want the souvenir, my old golf towel had been eaten by a mouse over the winter!

On Saturday I took my mom to the airport, it was great having her here last week, especially to help with getting the kids to and from school and making meals since Dave was away and I had a busy work week.

Because of the rain, Q's ball hockey game was cancelled so we found ourselves with no plans.  We ended up heading downtown to a phone repair shop to fix E's cracked phone.  It was a bit of an adventure to start out with some subway troubles, but soon we were on our way.  We picked up the streetcar from Bathurst Station which meant we got to buy the Jamaican patties from there. Everyone says that Bathurst Station has the best ones, and now I know why! They are freshly made at the subway station and they are legit.

Enjoying them on the streetcar.

The phone repair place was at Bathurst and Richmond. He needed two hours to fix it so we meandered about.  I liked this view of the new condos with the old church and houses.

Then we walked through graffiti alley.  E had just been here on a class field trip so he shared a bit of about what he learned since they had visited with a tour guide.

When we visited graffiti alley last year we saw the artist working on this piece, nice to see it completed.

Then we made it our ultimate destination, The Well, a multi-use development. There is still a bit of construction happening and many things not opened yet, but this is definitely going to be a fun place, lots of shops, lots of places to eat and hang out.
This was at the gift shop for Arcadia Earth, which is an exhibit that we did not visit.

Dave and I got salads from Mandy's and the boys got pizza.  Since these are pretty much the only places that are open to get food, both were very busy, but we persevered and really enjoyed our meals.  This is the inside of Mandy's.

It was raining a bit as got ready to walk back to the phone repair shop.  Q wanted a photo with this metal guy.

Fun little park on the way back, the boys walked the labyrinth but had to avoid the play structures.

After we got the phone we took the streetcar and subway back home, and then settled in to watch the Leafs game, but I won't need to say much about that game..

It was a warmer drier morning.  We were out of milk so I decided to walk up to get some from the gas station but also treat us to coffee and muffins from Tim Horton's.

We went to church.

And then it did end up raining for a bit, but when it cleared up we biked to the ball field for some practice.

Spring is getting here!
