Weekend Recap - Impromtu Dinner Party

Our weekend was busy, as usual.  On Friday night I got to out by myself! (small victories for a mom and wife to a currently disabled husband).  Well I didn't go out totally by myself, I met a friend for dinner at Montecito. It is actually co-owned by director (and Canadian) Ivan Reitman.  Good restaurant and better company.

On Saturday we headed up to Yorkdale Mall to look at furniture at Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. We saw some nice things but nothing we just had to have. And then since we were in the vicinity of a Chipotle I had to get an burrito bowl.  E had the hard shelled tacos and loved them.  (Dave had a regular burrito, just so he doesn't feel left out).  Then we went to a place on the east side that makes handcrafted furniture from recovered wood, and since we want a dining room table that has a rustic sort of look we wanted to check it out.  They have very nice items there but we didn't make any decisions.

We were going to head to the Roncesvalles Polish Festival but we were getting tired so we just had a simple supper at home.  After E went to bed, we started watching Anchorman 2 but I couldn't do it, too silly for me, and we switched to Hunger Games - Catching Fire, which I could probably watch every night and still love it.

On Sunday, we headed to church and then came home to get the house ready for our little dinner party.  To call it a dinner party is kind of a stretch, we had people over for dinner, I invited them on Tuesday so it wasn't a big event or anything.  Our friends have two kids, one girl just a little younger than E and a baby.  E loved having someone over to play and couldn't wait to show her all of his toys.

The "kids'" table. They didn't actually sit there for any length of time, nothing to tie them down with.

The adult table.

Our menu was simple but tasty - broccoli salad, caprese salad (more or less, same ingredients), roasted potatoes, and pot roast in the slow cooker.  For dessert I made Mix and Match Mama's pumpkin bundt cake.  This was all perfect food to make ahead of time so I didn't have to be in the kitchen when our guests arrived.

A few beers to try. I realize I didn't actually offer the first one, oops.

Head of broccoli, package of bacon bits, handful of dried cranberries, cup of grated cheddar cheese, half a bottle of honey mustard dressing.

Pint and a half of cherry tomatoes, cut in half, container of mini bocconcini cheese, also cut in half, fresh basil from our garden, balsamic vinegar, good quality olive oil, salt and pepper

Bag of mini multi-coloured potatoes, cut in half, olive oil, fresh rosemary, garlic powder, salt, pepper. 400 degree oven for 40 minutes on bottom shelf.
I doubled this recipe for the pot roast.

Pumpkin Spice Bundt Cake (using the variation of spice cake mix and vanilla pudding)

E was a "little" wired after they left and somehow destroyed the living room while I was in the kitchen putting stuff away.  We let him jump around and bounce off the couch cushions for awhile until it was time for bath and bed.  Needless to say it didn't take him long to fall asleep once he got in bed.

Hope you had a good weekend too!
