Monthly Musings

1. Favourite thing about Summer 2025?
Joining the golf club as a "learn to golf" member. I've enjoyed attending the new member clinics, ladies' night, and golfing with E (and Dave, but less often).

2. Favourite thing you ate this summer?
The entire meal I had at Sea Rocket in Charlottetown was my favourite. A perfect Negroni, local oysters, fish and chips with homemade tartar sauce, and a glass of dry rose.

3. Did you see any summer movies?
Yes, we saw F1 and Happy Gilmore 2. Still need to see Mission Impossible.

4. What books did you read this summer?
So far only one, Like Mother Like Mother, but now I've got an Elin Hilderbrand one on the go.

5. Ready for fall or hold onto summer?
Holding onto summer!  We are only halfway through at this point.

6. What is different about your summer schedule than the rest of the year?
The kids are not in school so it means we are more relaxed with bedtimes.  This year I have been working exclusively from home so that has been a change for me too.  No need for me to get up and out the door early.

7. How do you take a break/relax in the summer?
Taking a nap.  I'm good at taking a short nap in the afternoon and since we are usually up and out bright and early, that little snooze is well deserved!

8. Any trips still on the calendar for the rest of the summer?
A couple of weekend t-ball tournaments.

9. Any summer concerts this year?
Yes, we went to see Dave Matthews Band at Budweiser Stage and sat on the lawn.

10. When does summer end in your world?
When the kids go back to school, the Tuesday after Labour Day.  Although the summer weather usually continues through September, we feel like official summer is over then.

What's Up Wednesday

You'd think I'd be tired of doing this What's Up Wednesday posts after all these years, but I love doing this little recap of our month, and I often go back to years' past to see what we were up to then.

What we're eating this week...
Sunday - Hamburgers
Monday - Quesadillas and Corn
Tuesday - Lemon Parm Pasta and Chicken
Wednesday - Sausages
Thursday - Dinner at the Golf Club
Friday - Take out

What I'm reminiscing about...
I was remembering summers I spent with my grandparents when I was a teenager, before I had a job.  I would usually go to Ontario to stay with them for a couple of weeks. My Nana and I liked to go shopping, we would play cards, visit their friends' cottages. I was lucky to spend that time with them.

What I'm loving...
E has a Canada's Wonderland pass for the summer and he has been there a few times already.  Most of his friends have one too and it's a great way to spend the day. They gave up on the line for the new coaster, AlpenFury, yesterday but got lots of other rides in.

What I'm dreading...
I still haven't sorted through the papers that the kids brought home from school (I know!!). And although I'm sure most of it will end of in the garbage, I am still dreading that task.

What we've been up to...
We had a lovely trip to Prince Edward Island last week.  You can read about it here and here.

What I'm working on...
I'm the team manager for Q's t-ball rep team so I am organizing the team dinner for this weekend and also ordering some Subway platters for Sunday.

What I'm watching/reading...
We enjoyed the new Happy Gilmore movie! And I just finished Amy Bradley is missing. We are always watching our Blue Jays, although this has been a rough week!

I just picked up an Elin Hilderbrand book as a summer read.

What I'm listening to...
The Rewatchables podcast on Brokeback Mountain.  I haven't watched that movie for many years but I am inspired to put it on again, even just for the award winning score.

What I'm wearing...
My new Blue Mussel Cafe t-shirt! I don't always buy a t-shirt from stores/restaurants, but I liked this simple one as a a souvenir from our delicious lunch.

What I'm doing this weekend...
Q has a t-ball tournament in Ancaster.  We have a hotel booked for three nights.

What I'm looking forward to next month...
More t-ball, golf, and enjoying our summer.

What else is new...
I had to buy a mug from Village Pottery. I chose this style as a latte mug for Dave.  And we of course had to get some coffee beans from Receiver.

PEI Part 2

You can check out Part 1 of our holiday here.

On Thursday we stopped in at the Cavendish Boardwalk and got a coffee and pastry at Receiver.

Then walked down the boardwalk and looked in the shops (and the boys found a geocache).

A pretty drive out to North Rustico.

We had brought a picnic lunch for the beach but it was so windy!! The sand was whipping at our legs so we did not set up.  We walked and waded in the water but that was it for beach activity that day.

The Blue Mussel Cafe is nearby and we thought we would walk over there and get some lunch.

Q found this rock and it now is home with us in Toronto.

We got on the waitlist for a table and then walked around.

This was one of the best meals of the trip.  The restaurant is so cute inside.

There was a little baby mussel in the pot so Q wanted that one.

We ordered dessert to share but Q did not share his blueberry tart! See the arm up to block us from getting a bite.

We walked back to the beach where our car was parked. Then we stopped in at the store to buy food for dinner and went home.

Another sunset photo!

On Friday I had to take a phone call for work so Mom took the boys over to the pool for a swim.  The afternoon was calling for rain but we ventured out to Cousins Cove beach anyway.  We did get a couple of sprinkles but we ate our picnic lunch and waded in the water.

E and I are out there! Only up to our knees.

The rain was still holding off so we drove over to Cavendish to play some mini-golf at Mariner's Cove.

That night for dinner we went to Carr's Oyster Bar.  It's in Stanley Bridge. The rain did come down then but we were safely tucked in at the restaurant.

Cindy's niece works there :)

Q brought this shell home from the beach.  He named it Timothee Shellomet.  It also came home with us to Toronto.

On Saturday my mom packed up her car to head home.  We had an easy morning at the cottage - packing our suitcase, tidying up, playing cards.  I also went for a run - it was windy, I'm not used to that but I got in just under 5K so well done me!! Then we had a swim at the pool.  Cindy came out and we made some hot dogs for lunch.  We drove over to North Rustico to the Olde Village Bakery. We got some donuts and they were so good! Crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside, and the right amount of sugar (or cinnamon and sugar).

We drove back to Charlottetown and got some dinner at Sea Rocket on Victoria Row.  This was also a top meal of the trip.

Very well made cocktails - Hugo Spritz for Cindy and Negroni for me.

Another plate of oysters for me and E.  I had the fish and chips for my meal, it was perfect and the homemade tartar sauce was delicious!

We went for one last ice cream at Cow's and then walked back to Cindy's house.  We like Oliver, but it's still not enough for me to want to get our own dog, despite the kids' pleas!

Our flight was at 5:25 the next morning so it was nice to be in Charlottetown at Cindy's house for the night, about 15 minutes away from the airport, instead of at the cottage.  Thank you Cindy!! We were very spoiled :)
An early morning flight sucks at the time, but it is nice to get home early.

Even though I have to get after the kids for being annoying with each other, they are very great travellers and it was a real treat to spend this uninterrupted time with them and my mom.  We got to do everything we wanted to do, and got lots of downtime playing cards, playing on ipads, and watching the Blue Jays games in the evening.  Prince Edward Island is a wonderful holiday destination and I hope I get back there soon without waiting another 10 years in between visits!  Dave has been golfing there for many years, although did not go this year, and it would be fun to golf there too!

My friend's cottage is on AirBnb for rental in the shoulder season, so if that interests you, let me know and I can share the listing.
