The boys and I set out for Prince Edward Island last week. Dave stayed home, he doesn’t have as much holiday left and he was expecting a busy work week, and he got to do some stuff around the house and get a few rounds of golf in. My mom drove over from Nova Scotia to hang out with us all week.
I had two goals for this holiday - go to the beach and eat seafood. Spoiler - both were accomplished!
Our flight to Charlottetown left around 8:30. We grabbed a quick breakfast at Tim Horton's and boarded the plane.
My mom picked us up at the airport and we went into town to get some lunch. My friend Cindy lives in Charlottetown (and it was her cottage we would be staying at) and she met us for lunch at Peakes Quay. I have some (foggy) memories of dancing at Peakes back when I would go to the Island with her in law school.
First meal - lobster roll!
Q was happy with his fish and chips.
And E got potato nachos.
We had to get an ice cream at Cows of course!
Shaking hands with what I can only assume is a Father of Confederation.
We looked for a couple of geocaches before heading back to the car.
One was located near this metal art.
Then we drove out to the cottage, located in New London on the North Shore. Dave's cousin and family were camping in PEI and were heading home the next day so they drove over to see us for a quick visit. It has been a couple of years since we saw them last.
The views on this Island are amazing. We could not stop exclaiming at how pretty everything is. This is out the front door of the cottage.
And this is the back of the cottage.
We played some washer toss. It was windy and a little cold. I was worried that perhaps we didn't bring the right clothing, but this was our only chilly day, so not to worry.
(E was playing with the ropes that usually tie up the dogs.)
And it rained a bit and we were treated to a rainbow. Cindy came out after work to have dinner with us (at Sou'West) and show us a few things around the cottage.
=We all slept well in our comfortable beds and woke up around 7:30/8:00 each day. (Although E was always a bit later despite being in the loft with full sun and us talking in the living room below him.)
Good morning Q!
We had some of our breakfast outside.
The red, green, and blue together is lovely.
We played quite bit of crib and solitaire.
Mid morning we got moving. Another great view - farm land and fishing boats together!
Our first stop was Burlington Go-Karts. This was recommended as a better track than Sandspit, plus Q was tall enough to drive his own kart.
P1 and P2 start positions for me and E.
Q did pretty well but he did crash into the tires and needed to be rescued. He was unfazed and kept going after he got back on track.
Then we played some mini-putt at the same place.
Our next stop was Mary's Bake Shop in Kensington. When I first visited Cindy in PEI, they had these cookies, and then her mom would buy them for me after that. They are just shortbreads with icing, but they are so good!
Then we got some take out pizza and garlic fingers from Greco and took it to Thunder Cove Beach.
Pizza on the beach is always a good idea!
The waves were fun to play in, but we had to be careful of the rip currents!
There was a geocache down the beach at a cave so we had to walk down there. The rock formations are so cool.
This is the beach that used to have the famous Teacup Rock, but it was destroyed in the 2022 hurricane.
We stayed for a couple of hours. We decided to go back to Kensington to the grocery store and buy some food to cook at home.
Back at the cottage, there were several herons out the back.
Perfection!
Our next day, Wednesday, started out at Anne of Green Gables. Of course I know the story of Anne Shirley very well but the boys don't. They humoured me though!
Iconic.
We went for a walk through the "Haunted Woods" and had to pass by the Green Gables golf course. We took this for Dave! He has golfed here many times.
Climbing a tree.
When you come out of the woods, you can go over to the cemetery where Lucy Maud Montgomery is buried.
We got a little snack at the cafe.
And stopped to get a geocache nearby. It was a large with lots of little toys for you to take. The boys selected a pirate eye patch.
Then we got to Cavendish Beach. All National Parks are free this year so we didn't have to pay admission for the Green Gables museum or the beach! Thanks Mark Carney.
We had our little picnic lunch packed. Smaller waves than the day before. The water was warm and we played in the waves for awhile.
Definitely a popular beach!
We went for a walk and when we got back Q was "gone", haha.
He's buried!
We stopped in at Avonlea Village to go to the Cows outlet store, and had to get an ice cream cone too!
Driving home.
We had a real treat for dinner - we went to the New Glasgow Lobster Supper. We started with warm rolls and soup - either chowder or tomato bisque. Then 1.5 buckets of mussels. Then salad - green salad, potato salad, and coleslaw. Followed by our lobsters. There are other options for dinner but we wanted to go for the real thing!
Our server says "do you want me to tie your bib on for you?" Of course!! It's part of the experience.
And you get two helpings of dessert! Choice of pies or strawberry shortcake.
Stopped in at the PEI Preserve Co. on the way home and snapped this photo of the Hunter River.
And another sunset view from the cottage.
I'll be back tomorrow with the second half of our trip.
Great vacation. Love pei
ReplyDeleteYou really got it all in! 🩷
ReplyDeleteThat sounds fabulous! I love those cliffs/caves on the beach.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I loved reading part 1 of your holiday. PEI looks beautiful, and the cottage you stayed at does too. That lobster meal with all those courses sounds amazing! I love lobster, but you won’t find it on many restaurant menus here—unless it’s a seafood restaurant, and then it’s usually really expensive. How lovely to spend the week with your mum.
