2015 Favourites

Linking up with AndreaErika and Narci for a special edition of 2015 Favourites!

On Monday I went through my favourite moments of the year, along with just a few photos.  For this Favourites post, I thought I would do a little recap of some of the things I loved - food, pop culture, and Toronto memories.

Song - I have to say this is a tie between "Wildest Dreams" by Taylor Swift and "What Do You Mean" by Justin Beiber. I have loved pretty much everything T. Swift has done, but I am a new convert to Beibs.  He really blew up this year and it's great.  You can be a fan of him now even if you're not a teeny bopper.

Movie - I didn't see many movies in theatre this year, but one I watched (that was actually released last year) that I think about all of the time is The Imitation Game.  The acting was phenomenal and the story was heartbreaking.

TV show - Another tie between The Affair and Bloodline.  Both of these shows are different with some amazing acting.  Plus I love Joshua Jackson on The Affair; he can do no wrong.

Book - Of all of the books I read for my book club, my favourite was All my Puny Sorrows.

Sport moment - Jose Bautista's Bat Flip in Game 5 of the American League Division Series.  When something inspires so many memes, you know it's good.

YouTube video - I cannot tell you how many times I watched the compilation of movie dances set to "Shut Up and Dance", but it was a lot.  It brings me joy.

Meal - We had a lot of great meals this year, both at home, and out at restaurants.  But one that I think about all of the time was at Mosquito in Barcelona. We ate there twice and ordered a whole table full of asian inspired tapas and craft beers.  I am still thinking about the thai fish pancakes.

Drink - My favourite drink of the year was also in Barcelona when we had the best mojito in El Born at the little bar at the end of our street.

New Clothing - I got a few nice new things this year, but my favourite is the green sweater I just got at anthropologie.  It will be a staple of my weekend and casual Friday wardrobe this winter.

Toronto Moment - Hosting the Pan Am Games.  People were skeptical that Toronto could pull this off, but it worked out really well.  I loved watching our boy Andre De Grasse run his heart out and come away with 2 gold medals.  Can't wait for Rio!

Canada Moment - The election of Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister with his Liberal majority (shocking, I know).  I remember sitting here on election night and feeling so excited about the change that would come.  There has been a strong start with the welcome of the Syrian refugees, a positive showing at the Paris climate change conference, the launch of an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women, and "sunny ways".

House Thing - Since we moved in last year we (well mostly Dave) have been tackling a number of projects.  I have another tie here, this time between our photo wall and the garage.

New Restaurant - My old favourites still stand but a new favourite is definitely Playa Cabana Cantina. I went three times this year, first with some girlfriends, then with Dave and E, and then with Dave and some friends of mine from work.  Each time was amazing.  I would be happy only with the margaritas and guacamole but the tacos are so so good!

E moment - E's first day of school.  He has done really well at school, not that I'm surprised, and his first day was a good memory.  He was very excited to go and it was fun to walk to and from school with him that day.

Dave moment - Going to the Blue Jays game at the end of August.  E was with Dave's parents for a week so we took the opportunity to go to the game which was a good treat.

Thanks for stopping by!

What's Up Wednesday

Linking up with Shay and Sheaffer for What's Up Wednesday.

What we're eating this week...
We have been spoiled this week:
Saturday: Ham dinner (at my aunt and uncle's)
Sunday: Prime Rib (also at my aunt and uncle's house)
Monday: Lobster straight from the fisherman
Tuesday: Pork Tenderloin
Wednesday: Probably just something at the airport
Thursday: Leftover soup from the freezer
Friday: Something healthy since it's January 1 and it's time to end the indulgences

What I'm reminiscing about...
I am at my childhood home and when we were visiting with our neighbours we were reminiscing about all of the Christmas Eves we spent together - crème de menthe parfaits, rummoli, bacon and cheese toasts, paralyzers, and other treats.

What I'm loving...
Yummy beer from Boxing Rock.  We are tasting Vicar's Cross, Crafty Jack, The Darkness, and U889 that we got at the brewery and we even ran into our friends from Upstreet while we were there.

What we've been up to...
Hosting Dave's family for Christmas and then visiting my family in Nova Scotia.  I'll be sharing our Christmas recap next week.

What I'm dreading...
Driving in the winter weather.  I don't mind it for myself, and we have snow tires and AWD when we need it.  It is everyone else that don't know what they are doing who slow the rest of us down.

What I'm working on...
Planning some healthy and easy meals to kick off the new year.  I got a magazine with slow cooker recipes in my stocking and I've been pinning a few new recipes on Pinterest.  Time to get cooking and stock the freezer.

What I'm excited about...
The snow that we got to enjoy in Nova Scotia and knowing that there is some white stuff waiting for us at home.  We have E signed up for skiing twice a week, so we need the snow to build up so we can start the lessons.

What I'm watching/reading...
We are watching the World Juniors Hockey Tournament.  This is a Christmas break tradition at our place.  I remember when we were still living in Halifax and had tickets to see Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury when they were on Team Canada.

I am reading All the Light We Cannot See.

What I'm listening to...
Serial Season 2.  It is a very interesting story again this year, and one I didn't know anything about.  I'm also thinking I will go back and listen to season 1 again.

What I'm wearing...
I picked up some leggings from Flow Active by our house.  I have worn them a lot so far; very comfy and still somewhat stylish when paired with the right top.

What I'm doing this weekend...
Cleaning, tidying and cooking.

What I'm looking forward to next month...
Skiing lessons, hopefully seeing Mockingjay Part 2 in theatres, going to the ROM with E's class.

What else is new...

Not much else.  You can see our year in review here and my goals for January here.

Thanks for stopping by!  Happy New Year!
(This photo lean post is due to the fact that I'm not on my laptop so I don't have easy access to my photos)

2016 Goals - January

Every year I make the same resolutions - eat better, exercise more, organize our house, see more friends, etc.  This year I am going to try something different, taking a page out of Shay's book, and make monthly goals.  Rather than setting abstract goals for the year, I am going to make a few specific goals for each month.  At the end of each month, I'll check back with you to let you know how I've done.

Here we go:

1. Put away the Christmas decorations and tidy up the storage space downstairs.

2. Make an eye appointment for me and E.  And then buy new glasses for myself.  I haven't bought new glasses since I lived in Saint John, which was 8 years ago.  My glasses are kind of out of style now so I rarely wear them (I wear contacts all day, everyday, so I'm not blind, so I can still see).

3. Read my book club book - All the Lights We Cannot See.

4. Invite some friends over for a playdate/lunch.

5. Write some handwritten thank you notes.

6. Clean out my drawers and fold my clothes the Konmari way.
