Weekend Recap

 Happy Halloween!!

We returned from our holiday on Friday afternoon, and our house construction workers were in the basement working on some of the boiler work, so we needed to gather in our room until they were tidied up and out of there.  And then Dave and I had clean up before we could start unpacking.  It was good to be home though.

That night we watched Amazing Race and got to bed early.

On Saturday morning, I went for a walk. I wanted to see the fall colours and I didn't want to get all sweaty with a run. And this way I could catch up on some podcasts and go through the woods for a bit of a hike.

I love this woods trail because a lot of people don't know about it, and it feels very remote, yet still very close to the path (so it's safe enough if you need to run from coyotes or vagrants!).

Dave had a golf game on Saturday, the club's fun "Pumpkin Scramble" where they do some fun things with the tee boxes and holes.  Meanwhile the kids played with Lego and I did some computer work.

Then we had swimming lessons. You're not supposed to take photos in the pool, but I snuck this one of just E doing his laps so I thought that was okay.

Then we went on a search for a gluten free cupcake for one of E's friends, and were semi-successful. And then we bought ourselves these very gluten-filled cookies.  So decadent, are we still on vacation?!

We went to Walmart for Halloween things, and the local produce store for pumpkins. (The Harry Potter thing is actually for Christmas, E convinced me to buy this blow up. It's supposed to be for his room, but it's 4 feet tall!)

I made a late afternoon snack like my aunt used to make us.  Cut up apples, but with some chocolate chips and marshmallows thrown in, I forgot about the raisins though!  We each got a bowl and it was exactly what we needed.

After Dave got home we watched the F1 Quali, and then I went downtown to meet some friends.  We ate at The Keg and got drinks at the Fairmont.   We are going to Miami next week together so this was a good time to review our itinerary :)

It was a late night, but I didn't have too much trouble getting up the next day and even did a 20 minute Peloton before church.

Then it was time for E's belated birthday party.  We took 8 of his friends (plus E and Q so 10 kids total) down to The Rec Room for some food and arcade games. Although we probably could have fit everyone in our cars and driven down, I did not want to go in and out of the city on a Sunday afternoon, so we took the subway (under 13 is still free). It was a good adventure for the boys, especially when service was briefly suspended between Ossington and Broadview and we wondered if we needed to get a shuttle bus, but then service resumed and we were on our way.

They all had fun at the various games.

I brought these cupcakes with us.

and we sang Happy Birthday.

We didn't do a birthday party package, just paid for the bracelets and ordered some appetizers for the boys to graze on. Not sure if we saved money with what we did, but the birthday package seemed geared towards smaller kids.  They are a great group of kids and some even wrote out some nice cards to E and how he's such a nice friend.

We got everyone back home, ate some of the leftover pizza, watched the Mexico F1 race and got to bed.

What's Up Wednesday (On Monday)

I missed last week's link up for What's Up Wednesday but I do like to keep this record so I'm posting it today.

What we're eating this week...
As I'm writing this on Saturday morning I don't have our meal plan for the week figured out yet.  We just need to get back on the healthy train after indulging during our holidays last week (no regrets though, that's what holidays are for!).

What I'm reminiscing about...
We celebrated E's Birthday last week and I was reminiscing about bringing him home from the hospital (thanks to Facebook memories).  Even though he is 12 now, he still loves spending time with us.

What I'm loving...
The fall colours finally arrived here.  It took awhile since the weather hadn't been cold enough, but when we got home on Friday I was happy to see those bright reds, oranges, and yellows.  I do love where we live so we can enjoy all of the seasons.

What we've been up to...
The kids did cross-country, with E making it to the second round.  They are working hard at school. I was there the other day and saw some of Q's artwork out in the hallway.

What I'm dreading...
We say this every year but we would like to not go overboard with Christmas spending this year.  We did just go to Disney and we are in the midst of a renovation so it would make sense to have a more austere holiday season.  I'm still dreading the visa bills that come in after the holidays though!

What I'm working on...
Putting together my posts on our trip to Disney and Universal.  I often look back at the posts from 2018 so I'm excited to put these together.

What I'm excited about...
Halloween! It's not my strongest holiday, but I love seeing the different costumes and carving pumpkins.

What I'm watching/reading...
I'm watching Starstruck on my own.  Dave and I are watching The Morning Show and Dope Sick. As a family we are watching The Amazing Race, The Great British Baking Show, Battle Bots, and Disney's Behind the Attraction. And after being on Disney rides last week, we need to catch up on some Disney movies that Q has never seen, like Pirates of the Caribbean and Tron.

I read two books this month - The Survivors by Jane Harper, which was really quite good.  And also Between Us by Mhairi McFarlane, a little paperback I picked up at the drug store. Although the writing could have been a bit better, there were times when things needed to be more clear, it was a fun little read.  Plus it was set in England (and the first book was in Australia) and I always enjoy books set overseas.

What I'm listening to...
Disney100 Official Playlist. We listened to it the morning we left for our trip and I'm still putting it on for now.

What I'm wearing...
What I'd love to be wearing is this sweatsuit I got for E at Zara.  Doesn't it look so comfy?!

What I'm doing this weekend...
Looking forward to having no plans, other than swimming and church.

What I'm looking forward to next month...
A girls trip to South Beach and the Keys and hopefully wrapping up the majority of our house renovations.

What else is new...
The kids were watching LegoMasters and now they are full into the Lego again.  But instead of building a kit, they are just using their imaginations (!) and it's a nice change from video games all of the time.

Happy 12th Birthday E!

Happy 12th Birthday to our Everett!! I probably say the same thing every year but what a great kid! As he grows up and becomes more independent, it is nice to see how kind and thoughtful he is.

We are so fortunate that he is so easy going, comfortable with new situations and people, doesn't get upset, and he never complains about anything.  I know he knows how to take care of himself and make good decisions.  We can send him off to the golf course or the ski hill and I know he will be okay. He has already told us of some instances where other kids were not making good choices and how he would deal with the situation, so he has a good head on his shoulders. I know he gets along well with his classmates and teachers.  A parent of one of the girls in his class told me that she had to work with E on something for school and that he was a great boy to work with, not like the other kids.  (She was very clear this was not a crush situation, just wanted to say he was a nice boy.) It's always nice to hear that.

He's a very clever kid, which makes some conversations with him infuriating as he always wants to be right, or to trick us somehow, so I'm still working on trying to understand how his brain works and be more patient. He is a typical big brother and loves to give Q a hard time, which Q does not handle well, so it leaves us playing referee and poor E gets scolded more than he probably should.  Sibling dynamics!!

Ultimately we are very proud of him and can't wait to see what 12 brings!

Holiday Time!

Whoo, we are off to Disney and Universal today!!  We didn't take a proper holiday this summer with a full week off work, just a few days here and there, so I've been very much looking forward to this break. Break from work and "normal" life, it will be a marathon of theme parks and I am here for it! Full out for seven days, I'll catch my breath later :)

Join me here tomorrow for E's birthday post but then I'll be taking a break from here until the 30th. Join me on Instagram (@smacto) as I will probably be posting a bit here and there while we are gone.
