July and August Books

I read four books over the summer and they were all pretty good.  Three of them by authors I have read before, and a new one.

Like Mother, Like Mother by Susan Rieger

This book was a gift from Dave and the boys for Mother’s Day.  The story is about a series of women - the mother, the daughter, and the grandmother.  The mother is a well known newspaper woman in Washington who came from difficult circumstances when her mother was sent to an asylum and then died.  The daughter grows up and wants to learn more about the family history in a way to understand why her mother was so distant during her childhood.
This was the first novel I’d read by this author and may not have picked it up had it not been a gift.  I really enjoyed it though, the story was fast paced and detailed.  But detailed in a way that made sense and you got to read full conversations between people that provided so much great background.  I felt like I knew exactly who the characters were and why they did what they did. A surprisingly good read.

Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand

I’ve read a few Elin Hilderbrand books and she always provides the perfect summer read.  This one is set at none other than the Hotel Nantucket, being reopened after a massive renovation following years of disrepair.  We get the story from the points of view of various people like the hotel manager, the front desk clerk, and interestingly a ghost that lives at the hotel (a bit of an eye roll here but the device lets us to get some information that would otherwise be secret so I’ll allow it).
The story was enjoyable with different twists that kept me entertained.  You can’t really go wrong with an Elin book for summertime :)

On Isabella Street by Genevieve Graham

This story is set in Toronto in the 1960s - we get the perspective of two young ladies, one is a doctor at a psychiatric hospital and one is more a free spirit, typical of the era, and they live in the same apartment building (small spoiler there, but you get that pretty quickly). The Vietnam War is going on and although Canada was not actively fighting, there were still many connections, which this book tells us about.  Another aspect is the decision of the Ontario government to shut down the psychiatric hospitals and turn patients out on the street.
I’ve now read several of this author’s books and I think this was the best one yet!  I love that she tells us about somewhat obscure parts of Canadian history, and I always love a novel set in my hometown.  I think my mom (ahem!) would like this because she was growing up in Ontario at this time and may connect to the story too.  Homelessness is a frequent topic of conversation around here, there is always a tent somewhere that people are concerned about, and it was interesting to hear how the shut down of the psychiatric wards contributed to this issue that we are still dealing with today.
Again, without giving too much away, something I love about this author is that lets her characters sort things out right away.  Someone makes a mistake, they apologize at the next opportunity and it gets worked out right away.  It’s a relief that you don’t get in other books where that turmoil is always in the background.  Here we hash it out and move on to something new.
Even if you’re not Canadian, this is still worth a read, particularly given the Vietnam War angle.

Come From Away by Genevieve Graham

Another Genevieve Graham book, which incidentally has a very small connection to the book above.  This is not the story of Gander on 9/11 by the way, a “Come From Away” is a term that is common on the East Coast. This book is set in Nova Scotia during World War II. I grew up in Shelburne so I grew up knowing the history that German U-Boats came right up to our shores.  This story starts with a real life rumor from those times that perhaps some German submarine sailors came ashore one night and attended a local dance.  The author wonders what happened if that was true.
History is never straightforward and I like that this author captures the nuances of it and describes it so well.  And of course I like that it took place in Nova Scotia. The parents in this book are the subject of an earlier book, so now I need to find that one!

Friday Favourites

Happy to welcome the weekend!  We have been recovering from the t-ball tournament weekend !

Q had a baseball camp this week.  He was dressed for it on Tuesday morning :)

E and I got out for 18 holes this week, a bit warmer than when we golfed 18 back in May.  We decided to take a cart and it made the round a bit more enjoyable.

We finished our evening on the patio, perfect!

This is the best time of year for Ontario produce.  We stocked up on a few things yesterday but I do need to go back for yellow beans!

Another favourite was watching our Canadian tennis player Vicky Mboko.  We were so excited to see her win here at home and will be looking forward to seeing her play at the US Open.

Friday Favourites

Happy Friday! We had a short week with Canada Day on the 1st.  We had a special breakfast on Canada Day morning, some waffles with whipped cream and fruit. Q asked why we were having a "birthday breakfast" and I said I guess it was for Canada's birthday. 158 years young!

Q and I ate outside,

Dave golfed in the morning.  I took the boys over around 11:00 and we did some practicing for about an hour and then met Dave for lunch.

One of the members took some nice photos of us in the practice area.

We went home after that for a little rest and then we went to the movies.  There are so many great movies in theatres right now and the kids chose How to Train Your Dragon*shrug*. Q has a Toothless costume so he wore the hood part.

On Wednesday night I had gifted ticekts to the Blue Jays-Yankees game. Since Q got to go to the box a couple of weeks ago I brought E along with me.

Grub Tub!

We were behind home plate about halfway up the first level.

The roof was closed when we arrived, then it opened, and then it closed again before the game was over.

We like Barger!

It was an exciting game!

And the Jays pulled out a win!

This week we got a new car!! It was time to get rid of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe.  It did not owe us anything, it was a good car for many years, our first SUV type car and what we brought E home from the hospital in. We got an electric car this time around, with plans to make this our day to day car and use the Volvo for road trips and carpooling when needed.

Q and Dave picked it up on Wednesday night. It's an Audi Q4 E-Tron.

Hope you have a nice weekend!

Happy Canada Day!!

2025 has been a year of Canadian pride and patriotism, not our usual style, but we're leaning into it.  We had a few rough years when our identity wasn't as strong and we seemed to be more divided than united on some issues.  I think most people can agree that no matter what problems we have, and we have many, ultimately we are very fortunate to be Canadians.  This year with a certain someone insinuating we would be better off as Americans, we were able to unite and find a single cause to get behind - Canada is not for sale, and elbows up! If even Quebeckers are showing their Canadian pride, then you know that's a big deal! [For those of you who don't know, the Province of Quebec has been interested in separating from Canada to be its own sovereign nation. Being pro-Canada wasn't really their thing.]

We will be celebrating Canada this year - the true north strong and free!!

Friday Favourites

Happy Friday, and a Good Friday it is, to those who observe.  A few favourites from our week as we kick off our long weekend.

This cool kid joined me in the front seat while we waited for our grocery pick up.

A bird hit our window earlier this week, it was a Golden Crowned Kinglet.  I thought it was going to make it but it did seem to stop breathing.  It was gone in the morning so unless we had a Jesus bird, then I assume a cat or raccoon picked it up overnight.

These pretty tulips opened right up to reveal some nice pink.

Thursday afternoon called for some French Press, and I got to use the press setting on the grinder.

I did a good job with my workouts this week.  Three early morning strength workouts and then an afternoon bike and core.

Dave was going out for dinner with his work colleagues so I took the boys to one of our favourite spots, Queen Margherita Pizza.  I walked up to pick the boys up from school and Q had this school project to take home, a little cumbersome for the walk to the restaurant and then home, but it was okay!

I chose E's pizza because he wanted something different. It came with a bit more arugula than he was expecting but he took off half of it and I got a salad out of it!  He did enjoy the rest of the pizza.

Q stuck with his regular cheese.

When we got home I set up for the Federal Leaders' Debate.  I made the kids watch the first little bit but then left them alone to play video games ;) instead of making them watch the whole thing.

Enjoy your weekend, whatever you may get up to.

Friday Favourites

Happy Friday, April has arrived!  Given the April showers Toronto got on Wednesday (along with some snow!) and into Thursday morning, our May flowers should be abundant.

We had a productive week - some new furniture was delivered, we got our tax refund back, and we used up some of our Avion points on a new coffee grinder and espresso machine.

Q had his last winter soccer session on Monday.  He had a good time, as always.

On Monday I worked from home, and after the furniture was delivered, I went outside to walk up and meet E coming home from school. I chose the wrong laneway so I ended up having to circle back and caught up to him.  E has this thing where if he sees someone from afar, instead of yelling out to say hi, he will take a photo and then text it to them (creepy, haha).  So that's what I did to him.

Then I did it again on Tuesday evening when I was coming home from work.  E was walking up to get a Subway for his lunch the next day.

And I got him waiting for his friends to pick him up for swimming lessons.

We have been loving White Lotus! Can't believe there is only one episode left! Piper, no!

With the various US and Canadian tariffs being put in place, the liquor stores have stopped stocking US wine and spirits, so I've turned to some Ontario wine lately.  I have found two that are pretty good.  Now hoping that the inter-provincial barriers can be eliminated soon and we can get access to BC and NS wine next!
