Weekend Recap

The word to recap this weekend is COLD.  We had temperatures around -25 degrees Celsius starting in the mornings on the ski hill and "warming up" to about -15.  The sun helped when it was out, but it went away on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Despite that though, the snow conditions were perfect and we had a great weekend.  But because of that cold, I didn't take my mittens off for many photos!

I took the day off on Friday to take Q up to a ski race at our home hill. They had some skills competitions in the morning and the race in the afternoon.  Q had a great time and didn't get bothered by the cold (too much!).

We were happy to get home and cozy warm under the electric blanket! E had school that day and Dave was working so they heated up dinner for us when we got home.

On Saturday we had another cold day of skiing but warmed up with après ski at Quayle's Brewery with some other families.

So pretty there.

We were spending the night at the hotel for the weekend.  We got back from Quayle's and ordered pizza to our room so we didn't need to go back out.  It was nice to relax and I was in my PJs and in bed shortly after we ate our pizza and we all got to bed early.

A beautiful crisp Blue Bird day.

The lunch schedule for the kids was combined that day so E and Q got to eat together.

We got packed up after race training was over and had a nice drive back.  We tidied up and I watched the first two hours of the Grammys. I was entertained, even with all of the commercials, but couldn't stay up for the whole thing.

Weekend Recap

We had a mini-ski holiday this weekend.  I mean, we always go skiing but this time we spent two nights at the hotel and got to do a few extra things with our weekend.

Q had a ski race on Friday so we packed up and drove to the hill that morning.  There was no school, but Dave and I had to work so we brought our laptops and headphones for phone calls and emails throughout the day.

E was one of the forerunners for the race (they go ahead to lay a track down and ensure timing is working).

Two different courses, the racers did both.

Our racer!  He ended up mid-pack which is pretty good.  There were some skiers from the escarpment (Alpine, etc.) and they are pretty good!

After the race and medal ceremony, we drove over to the hotel to check in.  After a quick rest, we went back to the ski hill for some night skiing.  We never have time or energy for night skiing so we took advantage of our overnight and went. It was so fun to be under the lights.

We spent some time by the outdoor firepit (my favourite thing in winter!)

and the boys got some Beaver Tails.

After that we went to Boston Pizza for dinner.

On Saturday morning we went skiing for a regular training day.  It snowed most of the morning which meant we were all soaked!

Stopping to see E come down the slalom course.

I posted this on my Instagram stories, spotting your kid in the lift line like they are a celebrity.  We call out his name and wave, but he's playing it cool and pretends he doesn't hear us ;)

E is the one in the middle of the photo - blue helmet, black jacket and pants, white boots

After training wrapped up we went over to Quayle's Brewery.  We have been wanting to go here since we joined the racing team, three years ago, but never found time to go.  This weekend was the perfect time to go. It was so great! We need to go back.

Two other families joined us and the kids played games while the adults chatted.  They have a few food items like pretzels, mac & cheese, and flatbread.  Everything was tasty.

Trying out a flight.

We brought some beers back to the hotel with us, but the paper bag they were in gave out just as we were going into our room.

After we got back to the room, we didn't leave.  No one was that hungry after the brewery snacks, so we just ate a few things we had in our room, and watched TV.

On Sunday we were back at the hill for a cold morning.  We had made sure that everything had dried out from the day before and we had our warmest layers on and it wasn't actually that bad.  Warming up at lunchtime.

Dave and I were finishing up for the day and then we saw Q and his friend so we hopped on the lift with them for one more run.

We got home in good time, stopped by the library to pick up a book for E to read for class, and then got everything tidied up.  We were happy to watch Buffalo win their game!! Bring it on Kansas City!

Long Weekend Recap

I'm starting this recap a bit earlier than the weekend because I never got around to doing a Friday Favourites post last week.

Dave's parents were visiting and did a few things with the boys.

On Thursday, they all went downtown to see Graffiti Alley and then met me for supper at the Amsterdam Brewhouse.

I made this yummy salad on Friday night to go with our supper - peaches, blueberries, candied pecans, goat cheese and a maple balsamic dressing.

We got our fire pit out the night and a couple of neighbours came over too.

We celebrated Dave's mom's birthday.

On Saturday morning Dave was golfing but when he got back we needed to get the rest of us outside.  We decided to bike to on of our favourites places - The Greater Good - for pizza and arcade games.  However once we got there we realized it didn't open until 5:00, and were 1.5 hours too early for that!  So to tide us over, we decided to look for geocaches.

One route took us to these stairs.  We could have circled around to a road, but decided to just hike up the stairs with our bikes.  There was a little ramp on the side so that sort of helped, but it was a long way!

After finding the three geocaches in the area, we popped into Blood Brothers Brewing for one drink and some shuffleboard.

And then we finally reached our original destination.  We were disappointed to see they had moved out a few of their arcade games, including my favourite, skee-ball, but we were still entertained.

And enjoyed our pizza before biking back home.

On Sunday Dave and I actually went golfing and left the boys home by themselves for the afternoon.  That meant they were playing video games and watching movies instead of being outside, but with school starting this week we thought it would be okay.  They have been so busy all summer, they haven't really spent long periods of time in front of a screen.
It was a beautiful day on the golf course.

This coyote (middle of the photo) came trotting across the 15th green while we were playing.  Then later it and another one were frolicking on the 18th fairway while we watched from the patio.

I hit a few good shots, but couldn't really put together a good score.

Monday was spent tidying up, getting stuff ready for school, going for a walk, and relaxing.  The weather definitely changes when the calendar turns to September! But even with the cooler breezes, the warm sun is lovely.
