Christmas Readiness

Around this time of year I like to do a little check in with myself to see how I am feeling about the upcoming holiday season.  I have found that the influencer crowd is very much over the top when it comes to being “ready” for Christmas and there is only setting - full on excitement and joy. It’s like a competition on who can be the MOST EXCITED!  When one doesn’t feel the same way, that can cause an unsettled feeling that often leads to being more depressed than you’re actually feeling. When you aren’t quite at the same level as the people you see on the internet, you ask “Why not me? What’s wrong with me?”.  Some years I have not felt very excited about Christmas for various reasons, knowing that family wasn’t able to get together like in those pandemic years, when things I was looking forward to were cancelled, when holiday traditions were being replaced with different things, or if the weather was too warm and didn’t feel Christmas-y.  I may have been sad, disappointed, annoyed, or just neutral on the whole thing. What I have learned over the years is that any of those feelings were fine, as long as I was aware of what they were, and determined not to dwell in any one mood for too long.  I am always a proponent of accepting where you are at any given time, finding contentment in the situation, and not trying to make something into something it’s not.  Each year will be different in its own way, and isn’t that a blessing!

This year I am excited about the events and special days to come. I started listening to some Christmas music during the first week of November, a little earlier than normal. We have watched a few movies, and I am actively planning our Christmas party.  Some years it seems like a trial, but I am looking forward to the prep, but mostly to welcome our friends and neighbours to our home.

As the kids get older, it means we have forgone certain things, like visiting Santa at the mall (don’t worry, we will still see him at the golf club brunch!), but it’s fun to see what still sticks around as things they like to do.  Q wants to do gingerbread houses again this year, and E simply asked for Christmas gum drops. I remember when I was in university, we would often sit around in the cafeteria talking about different things, and one favourite topic was to share how our families celebrated Christmas.  I’m sure the things that I remembered mostly only really happened one or two years and were probably not something my mom even did deliberately. I always wonder what our kids will remember in years to come. Despite our best efforts to make everything so special, their main memories will likely be of some inconsequential item that wasn’t even planned. Or maybe it will be something like “my mom always did ____” even though I don’t think they are even noticing now.

Something that does stress me out is buying gifts and also telling people what to buy for us.  But this year I have a few ideas (and I’ll share them later in the week) and I know that are real big gift is our March Break ski trip (details on that to follow) and so I won’t feel the same pressure to spend money as I usually do.

And as our minister said in church yesterday, God is a constant throughout all of these changing seasons, He is always there for us.  Isn’t that the best comfort of all?  As we move into the season of Advent, I will hold that sentiment close.  We, the church choir, are going to sing “Where the Light Begins” on Advent 1 and isn’t that just the most fitting title?

Weekend Recap

Easter weekend is always a highlight of the year - long weekend, high religious significance, spring weather, and good food - check!

On Friday I went to church for our Good Friday service.

When I got home, E had left to go golfing so Q and I made rice krispie squares and some crafts my mom had sent.

I picked up E from golf and then we enjoyed our annual tradition of fish and chips for Good Friday.  We order them in advance from the golf club, they do a great job, and saves us having to wait in line somewhere.

We watched some Amazing Race and Great British Baking Show before getting to bed.

On Saturday morning I got up for a run, it was lovely weather for it. Dave went out to Home Depot for some lawn suppliers and then got to work spreading grass seed and manure in the backyard.

The local businesses were having an Easter egg hunt so we walked up to do that.  You had to mark off if the store had a bunny or egg statue, and then you also got a chocolate egg.  We also picked up some sandwiches and Booster Juice for lunch, and saw a few friends and neighbours.  And E got a haircut on the way home too.

Showing off the egg collection.

It was Q's first ball hockey game of the season and lucky him, he's on the Leafs again!  After the game, he and Dave threw around the baseball and we ran into a couple of other t-ball families. Can't wait for that season to start in the next couple of weeks.

Dave and I watched the F1 Quali when we got home, and the boys decorated the traditional Easter cake.

And we finally got the rest of the decorations up. I brought this branch home from my run earlier in the day.

We enjoyed our Easter dinner on Saturday night - ribs, coleslaw, and roasted potatoes.  It was so good!

Easter morning - and the boys were excited to hunt for the eggs left by the Easter Bunny.

Just a couple of treats - Q also got a Mbappe kit (the French footballer, figured we needed it for our trip to Paris instead of Messi!).

And E got golf balls.

Some treats for mom and dad too.

We all went to church to celebrate that He is Risen, Risen Indeed!  And then went over to the golf club for brunch, it was lovely as always.

Donning his new kit.

After watching the F1 race, we dyed our eggs.

In honour of the Leafs first playoff game that night.

These are Q's eggs.

My eggs.

And E's.

Since we had eaten our Easter meal on Saturday and had enjoyed a big brunch, we were able to spend the end of the day outside.  We took our baseball stuff to the field by the river to do some practice.  This is also near where E has hidden a geocache so we checked on it.

We got home in time to get settled in for the Leafs Game 1.  I put together a little charcuterie.

We were happy to see the Leafs win and were tired and ready for bed after that.

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend as well.

Annual MacDonald Family Drop-In

On Saturday we hosted our annual Christmas party for friends and neighbours.  We had to miss last year because our house renovations were just finishing up, it was nice to welcome everyone back this year.

House is ready for visitors.  I am pleased to say that no one spilled anything on the white couch and rug!

Guest book.

Sweets table - this year I made sugar cookies, gingerbread men, almond cherry icebox cookies, chocolate mint icebox cookies, ginger chocolate shortbread, and Rice Krispies.  Dave's mom made peanut butter balls and coconut macaroons with candied cherries.  We also had chocolate bark from Costco.

I made candied nuts and ginger almonds.

We moved the couch in the backroom to create a bit more space.

Most people have beer, wine, or soda water, but a few people had some mixed drinks.

E found the fireplace setting on Netflix.

Q told his friends to bring their mini-sticks to play hockey in the basement.

A few treats downstairs for the kids.

The kitchen island has the savoury food - meat, cheese, crackers, olives, hummus, vegetables, and shrimp butter and oat cakes.  I made a few batches of these meatballs and made some hot appetizers later on.

This year we made up extra trays of sweets and the meat and cheese to have them ready to go when we needed to replenish. That worked better than coming through with the containers of cookies and other food and filling up the existing trays.

A few photos while we waited for our guests to arrive.

Mini-stick hockey was a success.

Just a few kids watching a movie.

We had above 80 people come and go throughout the afternoon and into the evening.  We missed a few people that couldn't make it this year, but we also welcomed some new friends.

The next morning came early when we had to get to church for 9:00.  It was pageant Sunday and there was an early dress rehearsal.  I dropped the boys off and then went to pick up Tim Horton's breakfast before going back for choir.  Dave and his parents came for 10:30.

E was Joseph this year, this is him dreaming and being visited by the angel.

Q had three parts - first a traveller.  His line of "I'll fetch the donkey" got some laughs.

Joseph, Mary and donkey setting out on their journey.  Q was also an innkeeper with no rooms available.

And then a shepherd.  He did well at all three.

The kids did a great job!

I wore this headscarf since the choir was supposed to be "people of Bethlehem'.
