Media Wednesday

The first book for our book club is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon.

This is one that a couple of us had already read, including me, but we decided to go for it anyway.   It had been years since I read it and I thought I would just be able to skim through it, but I didn't really remember anything about it so I'm glad we read it again.  The story is told by a boy who is on the autism spectrum and it starts with the murder of a neighbourhood dog and his attempt at solving this crime.  He speaks very literally, and will occasionally go into minute detail about something (since his teacher tells him when writing a book, it can be a good idea to give descriptions about something, readers like that).  I remember really liking this book the first time I read it, and it was true again, because it gives you an idea of how his mind works.  Christoper, the narrator, likes things very orderly and predicable. He will get anxious if things are different and he isn't given the opportunity to get situated.  He doesn't like to be touched.  He understands what other people are like, and why they say certain things, but he isn't like they are.

I marked two passages that I really liked, one is the simple way that he talks about getting married someday and the other is about how he thinks about the smoke from when his mother was cremated being part of the rains and snow somewhere on earth.  That is a comforting thought even if you don't believe in heaven.

The chapters are numbered by prime numbers, because those are his favourite kinds of numbers, and occasionally he will include a drawing or chart to illustrate what he's talking about.  It's a fairly short book and a very quick read.  If you haven't already read it, then pick up a copy, it's worth it.

Weekend Recap

A fairly low key weekend, and I think a good blueprint for what many of our winter weekends will look like.  On Friday evening I made a turkey pot pie and then we watched some new episodes of Homeland.  Then it was up bright and early to go skiing.  We are doing lessons at the same place as last year and we know a few different families that are up there too.

Since it was the first week, I wanted to get a lay of the land and decided not to ski this time.  Instead Q and I hung out in lodge while E had his lesson and Dave skied with our friends.  They came in for lunch and then decided to head out for the afternoon.  We were fine inside, but it was a long day of sitting for me, so I went for a short run when we got back to the city.  Next week I will ski in the morning and then Dave will ski in the afternoon with E.  I'll also bring the carrier with me so Q and I can walk around outside too.

This was my view on Sunday morning while they boys watched Paw Patrol.

Then Q and E and I went to church.  I had E find the hymns in the book, matching them to the numbers up on the wall, he's getting the hang of it.

In the afternoon, I went to a visitation at the funeral home for our neighbour and then did some errands.  Dave and E had a pillow fight, a nerf fight, and watched Fire and Rescue.  I finished off the afternoon (and into the evening) watching the recorded Green Bay game, what a win!  See you next week Atlanta.

A pretty easy and fun weekend.

Doing it wrong...

I see a lot of parenting stuff on my Facebook, Twitter, etc.  Sometimes friends have shared articles or other posts and sometimes the articles are "suggested" for me.  I also see things on TV and in magazines, and talk to other parents about what they do.  There are a lot of "rules" about what to do and what not to do.  Mostly they are just ways for people to judge parents on what they are doing, and I'm guilty of this as well.

I break a lot of these rules.  The following is a list of things that I have read at one time are incorrect:

- Q doesn't do tummy time everyday
- I swaddle Q in a blanket every night (and I put his arms down at his side)
- I sometimes bring him into our bed in the early morning to sleep
- I forget to give Q his Vitamin D drops everyday
- Q is not on a fixed sleep schedule; we play it by ear each day
- I wake him up to feed him if we need to be out of the house for something
- Conversely, I let him sleep in his car seat when we get home and he has fallen asleep
- The number of naps he's had in his crib so far, I could probably count on one hand.  Rather he sleeps in his bouncy chair, on the couch, or while we are out and about
- I let him "watch" TV (or rather, the TV is on and he can see it)
- I put him in his crib to hang out when I need to wash my hands, put clothes, away, etc.

(This list is limited only to baby things, don't get me started on the things we do/have done with E that are "wrong")

The point of this post is to say that you as the parent will know what is best for your child, don't put too much stock into what the books and articles say.  First of all, it's impossible to keep up with all of the rules; not only would it drive you crazy, but the rules can be contradictory.  Second, although there are good reasons beside some of these rules, you can't apply them equally to every child, everyone is so different.  I can get away with a lot of the things above because Q is a good tempered baby.

And also, don't worry about what everyone else is doing, or not doing.  Probably some of you gasped about the lack of tummy time, and others of you thought my list was too short, and that's okay.  Carry on with whatever keeps your baby safe, happy and healthy, and you'll be fine (and so will we).

Friday Favourites

Linking up with AndreaErika and Narci for Friday Favourites.

We got this little onesie for Q for Christmas. It says "Mighty Cute MVP".  Q's name is Quinn and you may have heard of the song The Mighty Quinn, so this shirt is appropriate since it has Mighty right at the top.

For those of you who believe in "push presents" (gifts given to the mom by the dad after the birth of their children), these are mine.  I got the bracelet when E was born and then I got the charm when Q was born.

Apparently pom pom hats are in, so I needed to jump right onto this bandwagon.  I picked up this hat the Gap last week, and bonus it was on sale.  Then funny story, when I picked up E from school on Monday, one of his friends (a five year old girl) says "I have that hat", so I guess I'm taking my fashion cues from sweet little Hazel.

Santa put this buff in E's stocking, and I thought it was great so Dave and I both got one.  They are from MEC and fit under our ski helmets.  E has a blue one, but I have this pretty patterned one.

Happy Friday, stay warm!

Three Things...

Three things that are going on with each of us at the moment:

Q (3 and half months)
1. Drooling and chewing on his hands, teeth must be on their way.
2. Laughing.  We always get big smiles, but he's recently starting laughing too.
3. Playing in our borrowed exersaucer.  He's little in it, but he isn't unhappy so he sits there for short periods at a time.

E
1. New snowsuit.  He was still fitting in his old one but it was looking a little uncomfortable and dirty.

2. He started skating lessons this week.  He has gone with me a few times but needs the lessons to really progress.
3. He started his next session of swimming lessons and after the first one, the instructor said he was too advanced for the class.  I'm trying to see if I an get him into another class but if not, then he'll just have to go back to the one we originally signed him up for.  I see the swimming lessons as more of time in the pool where he has fun, so if he doesn't learn anything new this time, I'm okay with it.

Dave
1. Lots of running even in the cold and snowy weather.

2. Getting our ski stuff ready for the weekend.  He'll get the ski racks on the car, and pack it all up on Saturday morning when we're ready to head to the hill.
3. New pants.  He wanted something to wear around that aren't jeans and aren't really sweatpants or track pants, so when we went to the mall last weekend, he found a pair of Under Armour joggers.  They looks comfy and I want a pair! (as if I don't have enough comfy pants)

Me
1. Trying new recipes from Jamie Oliver's cookbooks.

2. Trying to keep up with my cleaning schedule
3. Working out three days a week and trying to avoid treats during the day.

Workin' it Wednesday

Yay, a new link up!!  Thanks Shay and Erika!  You can read the description above, so you get the idea.  The first topic is New Year's Goals.

One of my goals is to make a cleaning schedule. Since I'm off work right now, I can do some cleaning during the days rather than doing it all on the weekends.  Rather than winging it, I do better if I have a schedule so I know what I'm supposed to do on a certain day.  I considered what else we have going on, for example, on days I go to the gym, I don't want a big cleaning task, and when we like to have certain clean laundry.  It is also not written in stone so I can make adjustments.  These are more "guidelines" really.  This is the first week so we'll see how it goes. (Full disclosure, not perfectly because sometimes shovelling snow zaps your energy for vacuuming, so I've already made a change to my original plan, revised version below)  And if I don't get to something one day, I'll just do it the following day.

Everyday - Make beds, Tidy clothes in rooms, Wipe counters and chairs, Sweep main level, Dishes

Monday - Bathrooms

Tuesday - Dust and clean mirror and windows, collect garbage

Wednesday - Vacuum and mop basement

Thursday - Vacuum and mop main level and upstairs, Q's laundry

Friday - E's laundry, My laundry

Weekend - one or more of the following, on a rotating basis, as required:
Wipe outside of cupboards, organize and wipe out insides
Clean microwave
Clean fridge
Wipe out/down washer and dryer
Wipe down doors
Clean out recycling bin and organics bin

Sunday - Wash sheets, bath towels, dish towels

I've also assigned some of these tasks to E to help with.  He can clean the mirror and windows, take the sheets off of his bed and put them in the washer, and he can put away his laundry (he could probably fold it too but my laundry OCD can't surrender this task yet).  Dave will help out with the everyday and weekend tasks.

(And no, I don't want to hire a cleaning lady.)

Weekend Recap

It was a cold day on Friday but we warmed things up around here by making tacos including tortillas from scratch!  In my new cookbook, Jamie Oliver's Classic Family Meals, he included this recipe.  The tortillas are just flour and water (duh!) and some oil and salt, and they cook up really quickly in a hot pan.  We will definitely be making these again!

After Q and E went to bed, we watched The Infiltrator.  It was the $0.99 movie on iTunes, but it was pretty good.

On Saturday morning we got up and went to MEC to buy a few things - some new long underwear, some buffs for skiing, and some Clif bars.

E pushed the stroller around the store.

Then we drove out to Mississauga for a birthday party for one of E's classmates.  We dropped him off at the indoor playground/arcade and then we went to the mall for lunch and a little shopping.  When we picked him up, he was playing this games, it involved shooting a huge spider.

Awkward - Q and Frances Fox have matching outfits

When we got home we made tea lattes and watched Beauty and the Beast. I can quote most of the dialogue by heart (hence the Best Mom Ever mug).

Another set of matching pyjamas!  E already had his and friends gave us these for Q (still a little big, but they work!).

Our Saturday night involved the Raptors game and me reading Tripadvisor reviews of the resort we are going to in February.  I always love reading the bad reviews, because some complaints are legit, but others are so ridiculous, some people can never be pleased.

On Sunday morning Dave got up for his run in the cold, while I stayed cozy at home with E and Q.  I made this omelette that tasted better than it looked in the pan, although the colours are still pretty.

I worked on our puzzle and then got everyone ready for church.

After church we stopped in at our friends' house to borrow an exersaucer for (which by the way E says makes babies into sauce).  Q is still a little too small for it, but I propped him up with some blankets, and put some books under his feet so he could touch.  He did think it was an interesting experience!

Despite the cold, we went out for a walk, and it actually wasn't that bad once we got moving.  E got his haircut, some new books at the library, and a strawberry tart.  I got some ingredients for supper.  When we got back, I told E he should show his new books to Q.  He obliged for about 30 seconds before going back to watching his show on the iPad (I was watching Green Bay on the TV), but I did get this photo.

We finished off our night with the Raptors and the Golden Globes.
