March Break Recap - French Alps Pt. 1

Although this post is entitled Part 1, it is really the third installment of our March Break trip, you can see Parts 1 and 2 here and here when we were in Brussels and then arrived in France via train.

On our first full day in France it was time to hit the slopes.  We were in the Trois Vallees region, which is the largest ski domain in the world.  You can check out the map here. We were based in Meribel Centre, the town in the middle valley.

We grabbed our skis from the ski room of our chalet and walked over to the nearest piste (slope). From there we skied down to the lift area, got our passes for the week, and boarded our first lift.

We got to the top of the Tougnete chair and could not believe the mountain sights! I mean, we are in the Alps, and you know it's a huge mountain range but it is still something to see and marvel at in person.

We're here, let's go!!  We worked on figuring out the trails and lifts and got comfortable on our skis. The snow was mostly pretty great, especially at the top, but got icy in some spots and then softer as you got to the bottom. We aren't used to skiing such long pistes. The kids are so great on skis, and Dave is a bit faster than me, and although I am pretty good skier they always kindly waited for me to catch up.

Remember our "Spirit Animals" from Brussels? Here is ours, the Wolf!

We thought we had found a place to eat at Le Blanchot but didn't love the vibe so instead went to Restaurant Les Rhodos. It was delicious even though I chose a meal that was way too big (roast chicken with fries and vegetables).

A bit more skiing after lunch, but the snow always gets a bit more soft and lumpy after lunch so we headed home after only a couple of runs.

First day done.

We went for a walk to the grocery store to pick up something for dinner and I decided to buy a new toque.

Q made a fire in our fireplace.

And we settled in for a movie.

Day 2 and we started out with a plan to get to Mont Vallon first. It was also St. Patrick's Day and we saw a few people with green clothes and Irish flags.

In the chairlift.

That's where we are headed.

We cruised around Val Thorens for the morning.

And for lunch we found Le Mont de la Chambre. An Aperol Spritz in the sunshine hit the spot.

We did a few more runs and then conveniently found ourselves at La Folie Douce, the party spot for Après on the slopes. I knew about this place from Instagram and it definitely lived up to the hype.

A live band, singers, and dancers kicked off the show when we arrived.

Then the DJ took over.  We actually saw people from The Heights there, which is the next ski club over from our regular ski hill in Ontario. Small world!

The ski parking lot for Folie Douce.  People can also access it via the gondola without having to ski.

Some cards when we got home.  That night we got some take out pizza for our dinner.

Trying to capture the evening light from our balcony.

Last recap coming up tomorrow.
