Ah, our oldest child is graduating from Grade 8 this year! E was in a split grade 7/8 year this year (our whole school had split classes, eye roll). He had a pretty good homeroom teacher. She has mixed reviews but I found her to be very practical and a good preparation for high school. E has been in this school since he was 3 years old in Junior Kindergarten, so this is definitely a milestone. He made it though learning French, learning to read (and now enjoying reading for fun), being designated as gifted, having several formative years interrupted by COVID, and finding his close group of friends.
E had one of those years where he seemed to do just fine and get his work completed, get decent marks on tests, and get along with his classmates and teachers without us really know what was going on. So perhaps he coasted along in Grade 8 and is in for a rude awakening, and is a competent student and mature young man who will have no problems transitioning to high school - we’ll see!!
E had a really solid group of friends - they ate lunch together, made plans outside of school, and had fun at various birthday parties. In Toronto, high school is such a racket, and unfortunately they will be split up next year. Some are going to French Immersion, Catholic school, Arts, or Technical schools. I am hoping that not only will E make some new friends, but will also keep in touch with his current friends.
One of E’s crowning achievements is that he was always in charge of the school sound board for any event, play, assembly, or other special event. He was happy to volunteer for this job and he got many compliments from teachers and parents on his ability to problem solve and help out. He was also on student council and always knew what was going on.
Q will miss walking to school with his big brother next year!! We will wish him well in High School!!
All the best to E as he transitions into high school. He sounds like such a lovely and sensible young man—a good egg!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great recap! I hope he has a smooth transition to high school!
