Poppies

I feel very strongly about a few things - flu shots, voting, and Remembrance Day.  I realize that I cannot force my opinions on everyone so instead I will just encourage you to buy a poppy and honour Remembrance Day in some way this year, if you are so inclined.

We don't have a holiday here in Ontario (and I'll be flying back from San Francisco that day anyway) but I will record the service from Ottawa and watch it later.  We have two poppy themed books and I read them to the kids this week.  I think the school does a good job of talking about Remembrance Day so the kids get it.  And on those years when this day falls on a weekend, we will go to a service together.

A few good Remembrance Day hymns to check out:

I Vow To Thee My Country (not in the United Church hymn book unfortunately)
Abide With Me
Nearer My God To Thee
The Day Thou Gavest Us Lord Has Ended
Eternal Father Strong to Save
Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace

Lest we forget.

  1. Our small town Remembrance Day service attendance seems to be increasing every year. Nice to see young families there. And in Ottawa I love to see the WW11 veterans wrapped in a blanket...strong and proud. We will remember them. ❤️

  2. Thanks, Sarah. I looked up the lyrics for I Vow to Thee my Country. No wonder it was Princess Diana's favourite. I love that tune by Holst, Jupiter. That tune, Thaxted, is in our hymn book #256 with different words.

  3. I have bought and lost 3 poppies so far this year. J and E have lost 2, Vu and Chloe have lost 1. Hopefully, we can get more for the actual day tomorrow. I found a little Canada pin today, that I stuck in the middle of poppy #4 and so far, so good! There was a nice Remember Day service at RYRU today.
