Media Wednesday

I started to write about what is going on in the US right now, particularly with respect to the shooting in Las Vegas but then I watched Jimmy Kimmel's monologue from Monday night and he pretty much summed it up.  So you can watch this here (it's 10 minutes):

I agree with everything he said, but I think it needs to go further than that.  He points fingers at the politicians who we know are supported by the gun lobby and have no problem opposing gun control, and rightly so.  Thoughts and prayers are all well and good but then these same people will turn around and vote to permit greater access to guns, sometimes literally the very next day.

But what about regular citizens who live in these areas where the gun support is so prevalent. (I'm looking at you Florida and Texas.)  They tweet and post Instagram photos about praying and needing Jesus's love and all that stuff but then throw up their hands, like "what are we supposed to do?".  Well, I can tell you, Jesus isn't going to fix this.  Sure, I believe that your faith can make you stronger and can provide some guidance for what you should be doing with your life, but people still need to do the doing here on earth.

We used to joke about Carrie Underwood's song, "Jesus Take the Wheel".  Good song, catchy tune, I love Carrie Underwood, but when taken literally, it's a little silly.  The lyrics say: "She was so scared.  She threw her hands up in the air. Jesus take the wheel, take it from my hands."  We used to counter that with, "Jesus, write my exams".  I am all for praying for comfort and strength and all that, but it is not going to be enough without some action to back it up.  I mean you can look right to the bible, if that is your source of inspiration, and find the words that tell you this.

James 2:14-17 - What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accomplished by action, is dead.

1 John 3:18 - Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

So for all of these Christians that spread the Good Word, they need to stop supporting these politicians and call them out; put the guns away and stop holding on to the 2nd Amendment as the be all and end all.  Their lack of action is killing people, and I don't think Jesus would have stood for it.

A bit of rant, thanks for staying with me.  Stand up for what you believe, do more than just pray about it.

  1. This is a wonderful post Sarah! My dad used to always say God helps those who helps themselves... that also rings true.
