Each year I think about how we are getting farther and farther away from the Great Wars that were the focus on Remembrance Day ceremonies for so many years. I was born in the 1980s but I had a direct connection to World War II through my grandfather who served as an RCAF navigator overseas and grandmother who had her own stories of her nursing training, farm work, and friends lost. Although it was in the "olden days" it wasn't so far away. I also lived in a town with a military base, and my dad was in the military so even though there was no World War to honour, the appreciation for current active service men and women was an easy connection to the observation of Remembrance Day.

Some may be wondering with no active wars in which Canada is actively participating and the number of living World War veterans is diminishing why we should continue remembering. I heard it summed up very nicely by Brian Stewart (retired war correspondent) on The Bridge Podcast on Tuesday around the 10:00 minute mark. I won't do him the injustice of trying to paraphrase it, so see if you can find it and listen to him!

What a lovely reminder. I remember every year but today I was at home sick and didn’t even wake up until after 11 am. Then I didn’t even realise what date it was! Total fail this year but it’s been one of those weeks!
